Where migrant labourers’ votes count

Qutbullapur falls in industrial zone with many small scale industries in and around

Popular schemes of the government like Indiramma housing did not take off here

HYDERABAD: Among all the newly created constituencies in the city Qutbullapur has a unique identity.

It falls in the industrial zone and with many small scale industries in and around its populace is dominated by migrant labourers who are prone to influence, whether it is monetary or by individual leaders who hold sway over the area politically and socially.

Carved out from the Medchal constituency, it consists of Qutbullapur municipality and Qutbullapur village. It was one of the hot centres during the real estate boom but only a few people who had control over lands made big money while the settlers from the Telangana region and some districts of coastal Andhra, who constitute considerable number of voters, continue to depend on the local industries for their survival.

And it reflects in the constituency in the umpteen number of lower middle-class colonies and slums. In the ensuing elections where social justice is a dominant factor and majority of the electorate are from downtrodden classes, this newborn would in all likelihood send a Backward Class candidate to the Assembly.

While Backward Classes form a major chunk of 2.74 lakh voters, aspirants from all the political parties including the ruling Congress here are from backward classes.

Despite being close to the city, Qutbullapur still suffers with lots of problems. Low wages in the industries and lack of basic facilities haunt them. Popular schemes of the government like Indiramma housing did not take off here like other sub-urban areas. So development factor is the only issue here.

Connections

The PR leader T. Devender Goud represented the area in the last three terms thanks to strong base of the Telugu Desam Party and his position in the party.

Another backward class leader and Mana Party chief, Kasani Gnaneshwar has a strong presence here as he hails from the area. He is likely to contest from this constituency and he is said to be in touch with the Grand Alliance.

Given his connections, financial muscle and caste votes he is likely to be the deciding factor.

Congress party too has some big names in the fray. DCC president, K.M. Pratap and former Chairman of Police Housing Corporation, Kuna Srisailam Goud are the hot contenders. Though candidates from

TRS and TDP are also eying the seat, it depends on outcome of Grand Alliance’s talks with Kasani Gnaneshwar. The entry of Devender Goud into PR has poured cold waters on the aspirations of several new age PR leaders as they fear he will decide the candidate for the party.
